Position Summary

Provide leadership through collaborative processes to formulate, develop, implement, and evaluate Science curriculum and content.  Provide instructional leadership and support classroom teaching to promote positive change and commitment for engaged learning environments in order to impact student achievement.  Ensure an aligned and articulated K-12 Science instructional program.

Major Responsibilities and Duties


Instructional Management

  1. Support the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the science education program and ensure that assigned programs are efficiently and effectively administered.
  2. Support and participate in meeting the objectives of the district and campus improvement plans.

Management of Administrative, Fiscal and/or Facilities Functions

  1. Assist teachers/teacher teams in developing instructional units that integrate content and implement meaningful use of technology as a learning tool.
  2. Assume leadership role to implement quality professional development aligned with the district goals and initiatives.
  3. Assume leadership role in the adoption and acquisition of aligned instructional resources.
  4. Design, implement, measure, and refine assigned programs, and assist with quality improvement efforts.
  5. Develop, align, and maintain the district’s K-12 Science curriculum to ensure student learning of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
  6. Ensure continuous improvement in teacher and student performance through effective curriculum design practices.
  7. Establish integrated management systems to evaluate the curriculum and instruction program effectiveness for the assigned subject area based on evaluative findings (including student achievement data) and recommend changes, as needed.  
  8. Exhibit a high degree of initiative in response to requests for curricular/instructional support.
  9. Facilitate the development of collaborative cultures at the campus and district levels.
  10. Facilitate the development of Science curriculum-based assessments aligned to the depth and complexity of the TEKS.
  11. Model/demonstrate exemplary curriculum design strategies.
  12. Network with out-of-district entities to ensure district practices stay current with state and national best practice trends.
  13. Respond in a timely and positive manner to all requests for support from campus and district administrators.
  14. Share leadership responsibility with campus and district administrators for creating change-adept learning communities.
  15. Work collaboratively with campus- and district-level colleagues to establish and maintain exemplary learning environments.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, including but not limited to State Board of Education and local Board policy.
  2. Coordinate the review, development, and revision of all subject area programs and related curriculum documents and materials, including curriculum guides, course outlines, and teaching plans.
  3. Coordinate the ordering and use of departmental instructional aids and materials for assigned subject areas.
  4. Oversee testing programs for the assigned subject area and make recommendations for improvement where appropriate.
  5. Oversee the development and implementation of the High Quality Instructional Materials needed for HB 1416 intervention.  
  6. Assist high school staff with the Individual Graduation Committee process, projects, assignments, etc. 
  7. Organize and coordinate science summer enrichment programs.
  8. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

School or Organization Improvement

  1. Support common vision for school improvement with staff.
  2. Direct planning activities and put programs in place with staff to ensure attainment of school and district vision.
  3. Partner with campus principals and Chief Instruction Officer in identifying, analyzing, and applying research findings to promote school improvement. 
  4. Participate in campus professional learning communities (PLC's)

Personnel Management

  1. Define expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies and support implementation of strategies.
  2. Work with campus level planning and decision-making committees to plan professional development activities.
  3. Confer with staff regarding professional growth. Work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.
  4. Provide for two-way communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
  5. Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.
  6. Develop and conduct or arrange staff development sessions, including sessions on delivery of instruction and enriched learning in classroom settings.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  2. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
  3. Serve as a role model for all campus staff.

Other

  1. Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district wide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
