TRANSPORTATION TRAINER AND SAFETY COORDINATOR
Position Summary
Oversee Training Program of bus drivers, coach drivers, bus assistants, and new employees. Provide direction for bus driver trainers in all training functions. Maintain all training and certification records, act as liaison with medical service company, schedule and conduct evacuation training, physicals, and random drug testing, conduct new-hire orientations, respond to and investigate accidents. Provide on-going training and performance evaluation for all employees. Assist with the administration of the department’s entire safety program, including industrial safety. Operate a school bus or other district vehicle as needed. Assist office staff with designated tasks as assigned. Maintains the highest level of ethical behavior with campus administrators, fellow employees, and our community.
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Possess a Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with “P” and “S” Endorsement” endorsements or be able to acquire within 180 days of employment
Must pass DOT Medical Physical and Drug and Alcohol Testing requirements
Must maintain TEA Texas School Bus Certification
Must complete TEEX Training Academy and/or TAPT Driver Trainer Academy certification program for school bus driver instructors within 60 days of employment or next available regional class.
Must complete the two-day Vehicle Collision Investigation through TASB within one year of employment
Attend TAPT professional development classes

Knowledge of student discipline procedures
Ability to pass bus driver physical exam
Ability to operate bus safely
Flexible and open to changes
Capable of responding in emergency situations
Ability to perform a front and back door bus evacuation
Special Needs training
Ability to manage students effectively on the bus
Ability to provide effective instruction to other drivers, students, and parents
Experience:
Two years school bus driving experience required
CDL Trainer experience preferred
Reports to: Transportation Operations Manager
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Train new drivers, coaches, and bus assistants
- Coordinate with Behind the Wheel Trainers to oversee all school bus driver, coach driver, and bus assistant training
- Enroll all drivers in certification classes and maintain necessary records
- Coordinate and maintain records for physicals and random drug testing
- Document and maintain all training records as required by State and Federal regulations and BISD policies
- Plan and conduct safety trainings and in-service meetings
- Conduct and oversee all yearly driver ride along evaluations
- Schedule and conduct evacuation trainings
- Cover accident management and investigations
- Conduct accident retraining
- Conduct video surveillance reviews for training and accident/incident purposes
- Initiates driver retraining according to BISD guidelines
- Identifies and develops potential candidates for TEEX Training Academy Certification program
- Provides initial training and in-service for Behind the Wheel Trainers and periodically evaluates their performance
- Schedules periodic school site visits and road observation of drivers to ensure compliance with established procedures
- Works with the Operations Manager to investigate complaints relative to safety issues and take corrective action
- Obtains, reviews, and monitors driver abstracts from state agencies for all driver personnel
- Drive school bus, non-cdl, or be a bus assistant as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Demands:
- Tools/Equipment Used: Operate school bus, two-way radio, global positioning system (GPS), safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher
- Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting; bending/stooping; pushing/pulling
- Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching
- Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds)
Environment:
Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular or prolonged hours
Mental Demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
